Meet one of the curators of Penn Museum’s upcoming exhibition—a Penn LPS junior

A Near Eastern languages and civilizations major, Cindy Srnka co-curated an exhibition exploring artifacts from designated World Heritage sites.

Opening Saturday, March 26, 2022, the newest exhibition at Penn Museum was curated by three undergraduate University of Pennsylvania students from across the tri-state region. Heritage in Our Hands: UNESCO 50 Years Later is an interactive exhibition that examines artifacts from four locations that have been designated World Heritage Sites. The exhibition explores the complex histories and cultural significance of these sites, as well the ways that the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage Convention in 1972 has impacted cultural preservation in the last 50 years. “These incredibly diverse sites illustrate some of the many ways meaning, value or interest may become increasingly complex or shift over time,” explains Cindy Srnka, one of the student curators. Out of the objects in Heritage in Our Hands, she connects most to imagery depicted on a cylinder seal and jar which speaks to the biodiversity and natural resources of the Awhar—elements essential to preserving a way of life practiced for thousands of years that remain relevant in a global society today.
