Course Description
This MLA seminar course is an introduction to the philosophical examination of questions regarding the nature of religious experiences and beliefs; the classical arguments for and against the existence of God; the problem of evil; the relationships of faith, reason, and science; the possibility of religious knowledge; the psychological origins of religious belief; the role of religious communities; and rational responses and reinterpretations of the problems posed by religious belief. Readings from the history of philosophy, 20th century and contemporary analytic philosophy, and the European phenomenological, existential, and hermeneutic traditions.
