Screening Feminism

Despite Barbie's box office success, only 12.1% of the top 100 films of 2023 were directed by women, and of those only 4 were by women of color. Despite these disappointing numbers, women continue to create groundbreaking works of cinema that tell new stories and evolve the medium. In this course, we will explore recent films by women that address timely issues, such as violence against women, as well as traditional narratives, like romance. We will view works across a variety of genres while also considering film's ability to reflect and shape our cultural reality and reassessing the standards by which films are traditionally critiqued.
