LPS Gov kicked off its first event of the academic year with a fall mixer that brought together more than 80 graduate students from across 10 LPS graduate programs. With food, conversation, and a little early-semester breathing room, the evening gave students an opportunity to step outside of their individual programs and get to know the broader LPS community.
Few high school programs include a carefully choreographed Japanese tea ceremony, complete with a tranquil backdrop. But for those in Frederick Dickinson’s East Asian History Academy, offering a partner steaming green tea while sitting on the floor of the Shofuso Japanese Cultural Center in West Philadelphia is all part of the experience.
For clinical research professional James Baraldi (MPhil ’26), the Master of Philosophy in Liberal Arts offered the opportunity to challenge himself while following an intellectual passion that could help transform treatments of cancers of the central nervous system (CNS). “I felt that the MPhil would bring together my broad research interests and help me direct them into a coherent thesis,” he says. “I wanted to come in with questions, not answers, and have room for exploration.”

Organizational Dynamics Programs at Penn encourage their students—often mid-career professionals—to see themselves as pracademics, or professionals who successfully bridge rigorous research and everyday practice. These practical scholars already possess deep organizational experience and are pursuing graduate study to understand it more deeply. When a new regional business coalition launched in May, Penn LPS alumna Claire Marrazzo Greenwood (Master of Science in Organizational Dynamics ’08) played a central role. As Executive Director of the Greater Philadelphia Growth Partnership (GPGP), Claire collaborates with stakeholders across the region to counteract slow job growth in the Philadelphia area.
