Nancy Watterson, PhD

Senior Lecturer in Interdisciplinary Writing and Capstones

Nancy Watterson has taught courses at the University of Pennsylvania (in person and online) for more than 25 years, with a primary focus on graduate and undergraduate courses incorporating ethnographic inquiry, mindful movement, public arts, and intercultural traditions and practices. She is dedicated to helping students develop confidence in their academic writing skills. She offers writing and research support for four master’s programs in LPS, including environmental studies, applied geosciences, liberal arts, and organizational dynamics. Her current research is rooted in experiential training and ongoing ethnographic research in Zhong Xin Dao/I Liq Chuan, the Martial Art of Awareness, for which she is certified as a Level 2 instructor.

Nancy presents and publishes on learning communities, academic writing, embodied movements, and community engagement. She obtained her PhD at Penn in folklore and folklife, served as a professor of American studies at Cabrini University until the school’s closing (May 2024), and has served as adjunct faculty in LPS since 2001. She had also served as a preceptor in Harvard University’s Expository Writing Program and a lecturer in Princeton University’s Writing Program. She has served as an editor for several academic journals, including Bodylore and Transformations: The Journal of Inclusive Scholarship and Pedagogy.
